The Learning in Places Community of Practice aims to be a collegial space for members to discuss and advance the practice and research of place-based pedagogy and community-engaged teaching practices. Place-based pedagogy —in our engagement with it— is rooted in the belief that understanding the impact of relationships, networks, and interconnected communities is an important component of educating and developing students. The Learning in Places Community of Practice will provide a space for instructors to contribute to the research surrounding the effectiveness of place and community-based learning and its impact.
This Community of Practice is an initiative facilitated by Dr. Alice de Koning and Dr. John McArdle at the University of Calgary. Dr. de Koning is Academic Director of the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking and a Senior Instructor at Haskayne School of Business. Dr. McArdle is an Associate Professor in the Accounting and Finance department at Salem State University. Together, they have created Street Challenge, a trans-disciplinary pedagogy that aims to engage students, community, and stakeholders at the ecosystem level. We will meet virtually once a month — allowing for frequent collaboration with individuals across the country.
